Everybody may have their own example of a hero, because the concept of a hero is personally defined. For example, African Americans' heroes may be Martin Luther King Jr. or Tupac, Filipinos' heroes may be Manny Pacquiao, and Hawaiians' heroes may be the Honolulu Police Department.

People have done extraordinary things for many years, in history we've had ancient war heros like Achilles, George Washington, and John McCain. Also we've had many Average Joes and Janes as heroes like Rosa Parks, Eddie Aikau, and Lance Armstrong.

In society and life, heroes sometimes act as inspirations to people. Children get hooked on comic books and TV series with fictional heroes, such as "Ben 10," "Heroes," and "24," and some on movies with Superman, Batman, X-men, etc. In culture, people look up to their gods as heroes, who influence their daily lives. People also look up to real heroes they know in their life, such as their parents, family, teachers, friends who affect them, or peers who inspire them. Many works of literature have been created based on fictional, non-fictional, and mythological heroes.

Media has been used multiple times to mainstream heroes and inspire young people. Superheroes were created to entertain the public by showing unnatural or super human like characters. But some movies like Troy, 300, and Beowulf, take mythological history and use true facts mixed with fiction to entertain. Although there are some mythological truth to these movies a lot of movies are stretched from the truth about these heroes.
